Computing
All pupils at St. Mary’s develop skills and knowledge to enable computational thinking and creativity through an ambitious programme of computing. The value of a multidisciplinary approach enables the development of logic through tasks that require them to draw on their mathematical, scientific and design and technology skills. Computing incorporates coding, robotics, computer hardware and projects to challenge pupils whilst fulfilling the criteria of the national curriculum for Key Stages 1 and 2. The course also embeds aspects of the PSCHE curriculum which covers online behaviour, relationships, and internet safety. Computing is an integral part of all learning and is fast becoming a significant part of everyone’s daily life as well as providing opportunities for work in programming and digital media. Children at St Mary’s will also be enabled to keep themselves safe in their online activities, ensuring they are respectful, confident and responsible users of technology.
Through the teaching of computing at St. Mary’s we aim to:
- Provide a relevant, challenging and enjoyable curriculum for Computing for all pupils.
- Meet the requirements of the national curriculum programme of study for computing.
- Use computing as a tool to enhance learning throughout the entire curriculum.
- To respond to new developments in technology.
- To equip pupils with the confidence and capability to use computing throughout their lives and prepare them for roles/careers that may not yet exist within this area of specialism.
- To enhance learning in other areas of the curriculum using computing.
- To develop the understanding of how to use computing safely and responsibly.
- Acquire a broad and deep knowledge with opportunities to apply skills.
Our aim is to provide a computing curriculum designed to balance acquiring a broad and deep knowledge alongside opportunities to apply skills in various digital contexts. Beyond teaching computing discreetly, we will give pupils the opportunity to apply and develop what they have learnt across wider learning in the curriculum.
